Animation Timing, FPS, and Keyframes
How frame rate, frame counts, and keyframe spacing affect Roblox animation duration and feel.
Quick answer
Duration in seconds equals frame count divided by FPS. Changing FPS without adjusting frame counts changes the real-time length of the clip. Always decide whether your frame ranges are inclusive before comparing tools.
Core formula
- duration_seconds = frames / fps
- frames = duration_seconds × fps (round carefully when converting back)
- Example: 60 frames at 30 fps = 2.0 seconds. The same 60 frames at 60 fps = 1.0 second.
Inclusive vs exclusive frame ranges
- Inclusive length (both ends keyed): end − start + 1
- Exclusive span: end − start
- Teams often disagree on whether frame 0..29 is “30 frames” or “29 steps”. Document the convention in your project.
Practical workflow
- Pick an FPS and keep it consistent for a shot.
- Block poses first, then refine spacing.
- Use the FPS & Duration Calculator to convert director notes (“hold for 0.5s”) into frames.
- When looping, align timing at the seam — see the looping guide.
